Renewing driving licence :

Commencing 1/1/2006, the photocard driving licence is valid for a 10-year period (instead of the previous 5 years) EXCEPT for the following cases, for which it is valid for a 2 or 5-year period only.

2-year period :
** new driver
** driver, 50 years old and over, of : public transport vehicle, heavy goods vehicle, security vehicle, children transport vehicle
** driver 65 years old and over

5-year period :
** a 5-year licence is issued following completion of the 2-year new driver period

Renewing your driving licence :
** The renewal date appears on your licence and, to make it easier to remember, is identical to your date of birth.
** About one month before the renewal date, you will be sent a new temporary paper licence with an attached payment slip to be paid at any bank (including the Postal Bank). This is your licence renewal and if you do not receive it you should notify the Ministry of Transport and Road Safety at telephone *5678 or 1222-5678 (or from overseas 03-9421920). The driving licence is renewed automatically after you have paid the licence fee, unless you are bound by disqualification, unpaid fines, or a medical condition.
** Please note that YOU are responsible for renewing your driving licence, whether or not you have received the licence renewal!

Requirements for exchanging a foreign driving licence for an Israeli licence :
The following requirements relate to categories of motorcycle, passenger car, and goods vehicles up to 15 tonnes only :
** a valid foreign driving licence, issued at least six months prior to entering Israel
** medical and vision tests
** vehicle control capability test
** an applicant who has never held an Israeli driving licence : your passport must be presented in order to confirm the date of entry into Israel and prove that you received your licence overseas
** A previous holder of an Israeli driving licence : you must present proof of the period of time spent overseas and of entry into Israel (passport or extract of Israel entries and exits from the Interior Ministry). If you have held a valid foreign driving licence for at least two years before entering Israel, you may request exemption from the vehicle control capability test.

Need a new photograph to renew my driving licence :
Commencing 1/1/2006, every driver must be photographed a new when renewing a driving licence. This service is free of charge and must be carried out at any of the authorised photo stations located throughout the country.
