The United Uranium Scholarship:

Supporting Promising Young Scientists in the Field of Nuclear Energy :
The United Uranium Trust Fund was established in 1966 for ‘the promotion and encouragement of scientific research and education in the field of atomic energy’.

The applicant must also be an Australian citizen.

In accordance with the Deed, the United Uranium Scholarship is awarded to ‘promising young scientists’ from any Australian organisation or institution whose research or work is in the field of nuclear energy. The Trust Company Limited is the Trustee for the United Uranium Trust Fund.

The scholarship recognises outstanding ability and promise in the field of nuclear science and technology, specifically as it applies to nuclear energy. Successful applicants will demonstrate a history of interest in nuclear energy and a desire to continue this interest.

It is intended that the scholarship will be awarded annually.

Eligibility : The scholarship is open to ‘promising young scientists’ in the field of nuclear energy who want to extend their development in nuclear science and technology and who work/study in an Australian organisation or institution.

The scholarship’s value : The recipient of the scholarship will receive up to the value of AUS$6,000.

Previous Winners : The Trust Company Limited has awarded scholarships in previous years for attendance at the:
** International School in Nuclear Engineering
** World Nuclear University Summer Institute
** International Seminar on the Nuclear Fuel Cycle
** International Youth Nuclear Congress
** Multi-component Contaminant transport program

Value and Tenure of Scholarship:
1 Each scholarship is for a period of one year.
2 The scholarship monies must be expended in total within the same financial year as awarded and for the development opportunity stated in the application form.

About the Scholarship :
The United Uranium Scholarship is intended to develop ‘promising young scientists in the field of atomic energy’ at an institution agreed to by the trustees.
The Trust Company Limited ABN 59004027749 is the Trustee of the scholarship. The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO – formerly known as the Australian Atomic Energy Commission) on behalf of the Trustee, will;
** Organise the scholarship
** Convene a panel to judge the applicants; and
** Submit the panel’s recommendation to the Trustee.
The scholarship is awarded by the Trustee based on the application that is judged to be of the highest merit. The scholarship will be awarded annually and the recipient will receive up to $6,000. The Trustee may, in its absolute discretion, refrain for any period and for any reason from the awarding of the scholarship. The Trustee also reserves the right to amend these rules and conditions from time to time, provided that any such amendment shall not in any way affect any scholarship already awarded pursuant to these rules and conditions.

Criteria for Applicants :

Each Applicant must fulfil the following conditions and requirements.
1 Be working or studying in a science-related discipline in the field of nuclear energy
2 Be an Australian citizen
3 Lodge a completed Application Form, including the required attachments
4 Attach the following documentation to the application form:
** A written and signed reference in direct support of the application from the applicant’s CEO/Dean or equivalent; and
** Photocopies certified by a Justice of the Peace or solicitor to be a true copy of the original of:
** Relevant tertiary qualifications or certificates; and
** Proof of Australian Citizenship (eg Australian birth certificate; Passport or Australian Citizenship Certificate) – Certification to be dated no later than 6 months prior to closing of entries date
5 Attach a written statement to the application form which addresses the following criteria in 500 words or less:
** Current employment in a science-related discipline in the nuclear industry or engagement in advanced nuclear studies in the field of nuclear energy
** Sound knowledge of nuclear fundamentals
** Being in the early stages of a career in the nuclear industry
** Holding of a degree in a science, engineering, or business-related discipline or having significant relevant nuclear energy experience
** Academic or professional excellence
** How the nominated development opportunity has educational merit and will extend their knowledge of nuclear energy
** An outline of the costs associated with the nominated development opportunity
** Commitment to continue in the industry at least in the next 5 years

Each applicant must lodge a completed Application Form, including the required attachments, and address the criteria set out in Section 2 in the ‘Terms and Conditions’ by the close-of-entries date. Closing date of entries for the 2014 scholarship is at 5pm (EST) on 12th May 2014.
