What Is Home Caring Periods Scheme?

** The HomeCaring Periods Scheme makes it easier for you as a home carer to qualify for a higher rate of State Pension (Contributory) when you reach pension age at 66.
** Under this scheme, periods of time when you were caring for someone can be included in your social insurance record.
** HomeCaring Periods can only be used under the new State Pension (Contributory) Aggregated Calculation Method of pension calculation.

How To Qualify For Home Caring Periods Scheme?

If you were born after 31 August 1946 and you have cared for someone full-time, you can apply for this scheme.
A HomeCaring period may be awarded for each week not already covered by a paid or credited social insurance contribution, where you were providing full-time care for:
** a child or children under 12 years,
** a child or children over 12 years who needed an increased level of care, or
** an adult who needed an increased level of care.

To qualify, you must also:
** have been permanently living in the State (except in cases where provisions under EU or posted worker regulations apply)
** have been aged over 16 and under 66 at the time you provided care
** not have been in full-time work (you can have worked but must have earned less than €38 gross per week)
** not have been getting a social welfare payment, except for Carer’s Allowance, Carer’s Benefit, Domiciliary Care Allowance or Carer’s Support Grant
** Only one person can get a HomeCaring Period for supporting a child or adult at any one time. For example, only one parent can get one HomeCaring Period for one child at any one time.

Note :
You do not need to apply if you are or were getting certain social welfare payments. HomeCaring Periods will be applied automatically if you spent time getting:
** Carer’s Allowance
** Carer’s Benefit
** Carer’s Support Grant (formerly known as Respite Care Grant)
** Child Benefit

Home Caring Periods Scheme Rate Of Payment

There are no direct payments for periods spent as a home carer. Any periods will be included during the calculation of your State Pension (Contributory).
