Applying For New .govt.nz Domain :

Government organisations should use a .govt.nz domain as their primary domain for websites and email. This gives the public confidence in the trust and integrity of communications from government.

Please use the links above to apply for a new domain name, request a change to an existing domain or to contact us.

The guidance below is designed to help you select appropriate .govt.nz domain names and to follow good practice domain name management for all your domains.

Applying for a new .govt.nz domain:
It is important to understand that the .govt.nz domain space is moderated and your request for a new .govt.nz domain name can be declined. Eligibility for .govt.nz domain names is outlined in the .govt.nz domain name moderation policy and you should read and understand this policy early in the process of selecting your website domain name to ensure that you don’t have to change your approach later on.

This guide is designed to help you understand the moderation policy and how to avoid having your request for a new .govt.nz domain name declined because it falls outside the scope of the policy.

As soon as there may be a requirement for a new website within your agency, you can start discussing your options for domain names with the .govt.nz domain name moderator as they can help you select a suitable domain name. It is important that you do this independently of, for example, any advertising or marketing agency input, because of the need to consider your new domain name requirement in the context of the whole .govt.nz domain. Contact us for assistance.

Requests for .govt.nz domains from State Sector agencies are moderated by the Department of Internal Affairs. Requests from local and regional government agencies are moderated by the Association of Local Government Information Managers (ALGIM).

Things to think about before you apply:
Consider developing a policy in your organisation for domain name management that clearly identifies when a new domain may be required, when to use an existing domain, when to secure a name outside of the .govt.nz domain, and how your domains will be managed on an ongoing basis.

Use of non-.govt.nz domain names:

You can check the WHOIS record for any domain name to see if it has been registered and who it is registered to. For domains in the .nz namespace, use the domain search tool on the Domain Name Commission website.

The .govt.nz domain serves as a clear and recognised identifier of government online resources, and grants them a certain authority.

We recommend against the use of non-.govt.nz domains, e.g. .co.nz, for government online resources.

The use of non-.govt.nz domain names for government online resources dilutes the effectiveness of having an identifiable and authoritative namespace, and potentially confuses the public.

Defensive registrations:
Broad and consistent use of the .govt.nz domain reduces the need for defensive registrations, i.e. registering non-.govt.nz versions of your .govt.nz domain name. As the number of generic top level domains, e.g. .kiwi and .institute, increases, defensive registrations will become impractical.

However, there are specific situations where defensive registration can be reasonable, such as protecting a government activity that may be subject to confusion with a commercial activity. Regardless of the public’s awareness of particular .govt.nz domains, some agencies will nonetheless want to register the equivalent non-.govt.nz domains for fear of cybersquatting, phishing, or intercepting emails (refer to the Glossary below for more information on these terms).

We recommend that you defensively register the non-.govt.nz equivalents of your .govt.nz domains only when there are security concerns with your agency’s online resources or potential for undue public confusion. Where such non-.govt.nz domains are registered, they should redirect to the equivalent .govt.nz domain.
