Who can donate blood?
Every healthy adult fulfilling the below criteria can donate blood:
** Age group: 18 to 60 years. (Donors of 16 and 17 years of age can donate after obtaining parent’s/guardian’s consent.)
** Body weight: minimum 45 kilograms weight.
** Haemoglobin: minimum 12.0 gm% and not more than 18%
** Pulse: 60 to 100 beats/minute
** BP: Systolic: upper limit 180mmHg and lower limit 90mmHg
** BP: Diastolic: upper limit 100 mmHg and lower limit 50 mmHg
** Blood donation interval: Three months for males and four months for females.
** The donor shall be free of any skin disease at the phlebotomy area.
** The donor should be in good health, mentally alert (not under the influence of alcohol)
** The donor should not be a prisoner, a drug or alcohol addict.
** The donor should have eaten something in the last 4 hours.
Who cannot donate blood?
Person who has suffered from HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis B C, genetic diseases blood diseases like hemophilia and thalassemia, chronic organ diseases and/or cancers must not donate lifelong. There are certain medical conditions for which you may be deferred by the blood bank for a certain period of time (for days, months or years)
How long does it take to donate blood?
Actual collection of blood takes 10 minutes approximately, however the entire process from the time of entry to exit from blood center takes around 30 minutes.
Getting Prepared Before Blood Donation:
** Have some non-fatty food and drink plenty of fluids within four hours of visit to blood center
** Ensure you have at least 5 hours of sleep.
** Wear comfortable clothing.
** Bring citizenship ID card, immigration permit or passport( for non Bhutanese)
Which situation do patients require your blood?
** Situations that cause sudden loss of blood from one’s body such as major accidents, trauma, surgeries, before, during or after childbirth, miscarriages, bleeding due to blood diseases.
** Situations that make you anemic such as chronic diseases of blood, liver, kidney, cancers, infections or certain medications.
Want to become a safe and healthy donor?
** Eat healthy and iron rich food to help increase your hemoglobin level and also to recuperate after donation.
** Avoid fatty food.
** Avoid indulging in high risk behaviors such as intravenous drugs, multiple sex partners, unprotected sexual contact with unknown partners and using unsterile needles for tattooing or ear piercing
