Applying For Your Licence:
To do real estate work in New Zealand you must be licensed by us under the Real Estate Agents Act 2008, unless you are a lawyer or a licensed auctioneer.

Who can be licensed:

In order to be granted a licence you must be 18 years or over, meet certain criteria and hold certain qualifications. We will also carry out a police check. Read more about:

Australian licensees still need a New Zealand licence:
If you are a licensed real estate agent in Australia and qualify under the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Agreement you still need to apply for a New Zealand licence. Read more about Australian licence holders applying for a New Zealand licence.
Applying for a licence:
Complete qualifications:
Before you apply for a licence you will need to complete all the qualifications needed.
Your application will be advertised on our website
On receipt of an application we will advertise the details of the applicant on our website for 14 days. During this time anyone can object to a licence being granted.
Send us your application:
Complete and send us your application form
You will need to complete and send us one of the four application forms (see top of page) along with the required fee.
The cost of applying for a licence includes the application fee plus levies
The current cost of applying for any of the different types of licence is $1,132.75 including GST.
If someone objects to your application for a licence:
Anyone can object to a licence being issued. If someone objects our Registrar will advise you of the objection, give you the opportunity to respond and will consider the objection. This process may take up to two months to complete.
We will tell you if your application is approved or declined:
Informing you of the outcome of your licence application
As long as your application form is complete and we do not receive any objection to your application we will inform you of the outcome of your application once the police check has been completed – between five and 20 days.
If your application is declined:
We will write to you advising you of the reasons for the decision, your right to seek a review and how to do this. The application fee plus GST is not refundable but the levy fees you have paid will be refunded.
Once you have your licence:
If your application is approved we will record you in our public register of licensees and send you a letter of approval and Evidence of Licence certificate. This will include your name, licence number, the class of licence you hold and the date of issue and expiry. You should be able to produce this certificate, or a copy of it, if asked.
You will need to maintain and renew your licence every year and let us know if we need to update any information about you in the register (such as your phone number, address, or employer).
