Apply For Marriage Certificate :

It is a legal requirement for marriages in Tasmania to be registered.

If you wish to apply for a certificate, there are 2 types available:
Standard Marriage Certificate:
Contains all details of the married parties. It may be required as evidence of the bride’s change of surname (if applicable) with places such as the Passport Office.

Extract of Marriage :
Contains names, and date and place of marriage only. It is not suitable for most identification purposes.

Access to Marriage Records:
Historical:
Marriage Records are unrestricted after 75 years.

Family:
Registered person.
Child of the marriage. Documentary evidence of relationship required.
Child of one party to the marriage who has an authorisation under Section 80 of the Adoption Act 1988 (form 17).

Welfare:
Government or non-government welfare agency acting in interests of registered person or a child of the marriage.
Access by missing person tracing services, such as Red Cross and Salvation Army, are treated under the Registrar’s discretionary powers.

Estate Matters:
Executor, Administrator or Public Trustee. Applicants must name the testator or intestate deceased.

Law Enforcement:
Police (State or Federal) or National Crime Authority in pursuance of an investigation or preparation of a prosecution or pursuant to a valid warrant or court order.
Other “law enforcement” agencies may be allowed access on approval by the Registrar.

Consular:
Consular Office or foreign legation of the country of one of the parties.

Statutory:
Any government body having right of access under Commonwealth or Tasmanian Legislation. Restricted to formal investigation. Agreements as to how information is to be provided or for what cost may be entered into by the Registrar.

Implied Agent:
Solicitor or conveyancer acting for a person entitled to access under “Family Access” or “Access for Estate Matter”. Documentary evidence required.

Other Agent:
Any person with written authority from, or power of attorney of, a person entitled to access under “Family Access” or “Access for Estate Matter”. Documentary evidence required.

Medical:
A medical organization or government body requiring to contact one of the parties. Evidence of necessity (such as a declaration detailing the need for registered information) is required.

How to apply for a marriage certificate:
In person:
To lodge your application at Service Tasmania
Fill out an application form
Pay the prescribed fee.
Show appropriate identification.

By post:
If you are unable to visit a Service Tasmania shop you can post your application to the Registry Office:

Payment methods:
Payment can be made by:
cash (in person only)
cheque (personal cheques not accepted for the priority service)
money order
credit card (full card number, expiry date and card holders’ name must be supplied)

How long will it take to process?:
Applications for non urgent searches will be processed within 10 working days from when the form is received at the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

Please note, processing time may increase during peak periods.

Priority service:
For an additional fee, a priority (same day) service is available for marriage certificates at the following locations:

Service Tasmania Hobart, Launceston, Burnie, Devonport, Huonville, Scottsdale and Sorell
