You will be sent a courtesy reminder about four to six weeks before the expiry date of your vehicle’s registration. At the time of paying the registration renewal fee the Compulsory Third Party Insurance (CTPI), Road Safety Contribution and Road Rescue Fee components are also collected.

To receive registration renewal reminder notices via email please maintain you personal details online by clicking here.

The Road Safety Contribution funds the NRMA-ACT Road Safety Trust and is a joint initiative of the NRMA and ACT Government. The $2.00 contribution, which is raised in association with ACT motor vehicle registration fees, is matched by NRMA insurance. The trust was formally established in 1992, with the principal objective of enhancing road safety for the benefit of the ACT road-using community. The trust has allocated over $20 million to approximately 340 innovative road safety projects between 1992 and 2009.

The Road Rescue Fee is used to assist funding of the road rescue services in the ACT such as the Ambulance and Fire Brigade services.

You do not require a reminder notice to renew your vehicle’s registration at any Canberra Connect Shopfront but will need the vehicle’s number plate details. Registration renewal can be paid at any Australia Post Office. Vehicle registration can be renewed up to three months in advance.

Some concession card holders are eligible to renew their registration over the phone. To find out more information contact Canberra Connect on 13 22 81.

Only public vehicles (taxis, hire cars and buses) and vehicles weighing more than 4.5 tonnes are required to be inspected at the time of renewal.

Lapsed Vehicles:
An ACT registered vehicle may be renewed at any point up until it has been expired for 12 months. Once the registration has expired by 12 months the registration lapses. This means the registration will need to be re-established not simply renewed. To re-established a lapsed registration, the vehicle must be inspected at an Authorised Inspection Station. Once inspected you can re-establish the registration by bringing the inspection certificate (you must complete the application to establish on the back of the inspection certificate) to a Canberra Connect Shopfront.

Please note: You will be liable for the re-establish of registration fee. Also if the registration was previously registered in two names, the other operator will also need to complete their details and sign on the back of the inspection certificate.

If the vehicle registration has been expired by more that 24 months you will have also lost the rights to display the numberplate for that vehicle. This means that when you wish to have the registration re-established, you will need to bring the numberplates with you to a Canberra Connect Shopfront as well as the inspection certificate (you must complete the application to establish on the back of the inspection certificate). If the vehicle was previously registered in two names the other operator will also need to complete their details and sign on the back of the inspection certificate).

Please note: You will be issued with a new set of numberplates. If the numberplates on the vehicle were non-standard numberplates you will be liable for all non standard numberplate fees to re-purchase the rights to display the numberplate again. If the right to display these numberplates has been sold to another party you will not be able to retain the numberplates.
