Transfer Interstate Vehicle Registration
You must change over your interstate vehicle registration and driver licence to Northern Territory registration and licence within three (3) months of taking up residence in the Northern Territory.
To transfer your interstate vehicle registration you will need to provide:
** a completed form R11- Application to Register a Vehicle in the NT.
** evidence of your identity and evidence of your residency in the Northern Territory. For more information about what documents are required refer to Information Bulletin G8.
** proof that you are the owner of the vehicle – this can be either a registration certificate that has been issued interstate or proof of acquisition (a receipt for purchase) of the vehicle.
** a vehicle compliance check (to confirm vehicle details eg VIN and chassis numbers).
** Compliance checks are carried out by MVR Transport Inspectors at Vehicle Compliance Centres in Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs. refer to Information bulletin G5 for more details about Vehicle Compliance Centre locations and operating hours.
** If you are in a remote locality or outstation you can attend your nearest Police Station.
If the vehicle is five (5) years or older you will also need to have a full vehicle inspection (roadworthy check). Roadworthy inspections can be done by an authorised inspector (most mechanics) before you attend MVR to transfer your registration or can be carried out by MVR inspectors at Vehicle Compliance Centres in Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs.
Note: Compliance checks and inspections at Vehicle Compliance Centres in Darwin, Alice Springs and Katherine are usually available without an appointment, during business hours Monday to Friday.
Saturday inspections are available by appointment only at the Darwin Vehicle Compliance Centre. Phone 1300 654 628 to make an appointment.
Please check operating hours before attending any Vehicle Compliance Centre. For further information refer to Information Bulletin G5.
You will need to obtain your passed vehicle compliance check and roadworthy inspection (where required) before attending an MVR office with your completed Form R11, Evidence of Identity and Proof of Ownership to register the vehicle.
