Once you are registered your ABN details become part of the ABR. It is important that your details are up-to-date so that other businesses can access and verify your information, for example, that you are operating a business or the status of your GST registration.
Your ABN details are also used by a range of government agencies to plan for community services and infrastructure development that can benefit business.
What can be updated:
** legal name of the entity (except individual/sole traders and companies registered with Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) who you will need to contact directly)
** addresses – postal, business location, email
** ANZSIC – main business activity and industry code
** entity type – business structure, for example, private company to public company
** contact details
** associate details.
How to update:
The fastest way to update your details is online using an AUSkey.
All changes made to your ABN online will take effect immediately.
Alternatively you can contact us or lodge a form by mail.

Cancel your ABN:
If your business circumstances have changed you have a responsibility to consider whether your Australian business number (ABN) needs to be updated or cancelled.
You should cancel your ABN if your business:
** has been sold
** has closed down
** is no longer operating in Australia or making supplies connected with Australia.
You may also need to cancel your ABN if your business structure has changed.
Before you cancel your ABN make sure you have met any lodgment, reporting and payment obligations you have to government agencies you deal with. This could include lodging activity statements and pay as you go (PAYG) withholding reports, repaying refunds of GST credits and paying outstanding tax debts.
Cancelling your ABN will:
** cancel your registrations for goods and services tax (GST), luxury car tax, wine equalisation tax and fuel tax credits
** cancel any AUSkeys linked to your ABN.
If you want to cancel your PAYG withholding, you must cancel it before you cancel your ABN. Cancelling your GST, fuel tax credits or PAYG withholding registrations does not mean you are cancelling your ABN.
How to cancel:
The fastest way to cancel your ABN is online using AUSkey.
You can also contact us or lodge a form by mail to cancel your ABN.
