Where is the EHIC Valid?
The EHIC applies in most European countries, currently in EU member states, EEA states, Switzerland, Great Britain, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. For Montenegro, Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, you must note that you must submit the EHICC to the social security institution in question for your location and exchange it in a valid certificate of claim.
This applies to the United Kingdom:
All Austrian insured persons and their members of their helpful family members can also take the United Kingdom after 1.1.2021 on travel to the United Kingdom.European health insurance card (on the back of the e-card)use. Prior contacting the responsible Austrian health insurance company is not required.
How To Use EHIC?
If you need to take advantage of a doctor or hospital in one of these countries, please show your EHIC facility as early as possible. Under international agreements, contract doctors and contracted hospitals in these countries are obliged to accept your EHIC and treat you as a national patient.
For doctors and hospitals who do not have a contract with the social insurance of the country of residence, you must pay the bill for the time being – as in Austria at an elected medical doctor or in a private hospital without a contract with your insurance company – for the time being.
The expiration date of your EKVK is related to the duration of your insurance periods. When the expiry date is reached, a new card will be sent automatically if you are still insured.
If you were not or were only briefly insured at the time of the e-card, it may be that some data fields of the EKVK are only provided with stars. In this case, please apply to your health insurance provider before departure for a “Certificate as a Provisional Replacement for the EKVK” (PEB).
And in other countries?
For travel to countries in which the EHIC does not apply, everything remains as before. For Turkey, please get an international holiday health certificate with your employer or the responsible health insurance provider.
