What is Belize Refugee?

A person is a refugee if:
** he/she has a well-founded fear of being persecuted because of his/her race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion; if he/she is outside of his/her country of nationality; and, if due to such fear, he/she is unable or unwilling to avail himself of the protection of his/her country; or

** he/she is from a country where external aggression, occupation, foreign domination or events seriously disturbing public order exists in that country and he/she is compelled to leave it to seek refuge in another place outside of that country.

Who Can Apply For Belize Refugee Status?

A person may apply for refugee status if he/she is within Belize and wishes to remain within Belize as a refugee in terms of the Belize Refugees Act Chapter 165 of the Substantive Laws of Belize, Revised Edition 2011.

How To Apply For Belize Refugee Status?

A person wishing to apply for refugee status must do so in person at the Refugees Department.

Documents that may be presented:
A person wishing to apply for refugee status may present the following the Refugees Department (if available):

** Identification (passport, nationality identification card, other photo identification)
** birth certificate
** evidence to support his/her claim for refugees status

Where To Apply For Belize Refugee Status?

If you wish to apply for refugee status you must be in Belize.

A person wishing to apply for refugee status must be in Belize and may present him/herself:
** directly to the Refugees Department in Belmopan
** to an immigration officer at any entry point or other location in Belize, who shall refer you to the Refugees Department
** to a police officer at a check point or other location in Belize, who shall refer you to the Refugees Department

Do you need a visa to travel to Belize?
Exemption for Belize Entry Visa for visits not exceeding 30 days.

** If you hold a valid multiple entry visa or Permanent Residence Card from the United States of America.
** If you hold a valid multiple entry Schengen visa
** If you hold a valid multiple entry visa or Permanent Residence Card from Canada

If you are travelling or transiting to Belize, you may require a Belize entry visa. A visa allows you to enter Belize and remain legal in Belize for a maximum of 30 days from date of entry.

If you will be staying longer that 30 days in Belize, you will need to visit an Immigration Office to extend your stay in Belize. The permit required to extend your stay in Belize beyond the 30 days is the ‘Belize Visitor’s Permit Extension.’

While you may not require a visa to enter Belize or be exempted to apply for a Belize entry visa, any visit exceeding 30, 60, 90, and 180 days will require a visa and requisite extensions to remain legal in Belize.
