Applying For Registration Card

To get a registration card, you should go to the Social Security Department in La Motte Street.

You must take:
** proof of identity – check the table below for details
** in some cases, other documents – see the table below

If you can’t visit Social Security in person, please call the Population Office to explain your situation.

When you will get your card:
You may be given your card immediately. If you’re not given it right away, we’ll tell you when you can expect to get it.

Card costs and how to pay:
A registration card is free if you are ‘entitled’ or ‘entitled to work’.

If you are ‘licensed’ or ‘registered’ your card will cost:
** £75 if you are new to Jersey
** £35 if you have lived in Jersey before and were registered with the Social Security Department before 1 July 2013

You can pay in cash or by card.

Documents to prove your identity and / or residence in Jersey:
Born in Jersey:
You must live in Jersey for total combined period of 10 years
If you have housing qualifications, we should have your records – call us first to check.
You must bring photo ID – such as a valid passport.

If you don’t have housing qualifications, you’ll need to bring:
** valid photo ID (eg passport)
** original birth certificate
** letters confirming you lived here for 10 years (unless you have a 10 year employment record in Jersey) eg from schools

Not born in Jersey and moved here after age 16. Do not have ‘entitled’ parent:
You must live in Jersey for a continuous period of 10 years immediately before applying for a card

You must bring valid photo ID (eg passport).

If you don’t have a 10-year continuous employment record here, you’ll need to bring proof to cover any gaps like:
** landlord references with dates from written records eg lodging house registers or rent books

Not born in Jersey and moved here before age 20. Have an ‘entitled’ parent:
You must live in Jersey for a total combined period of 10 years before the age of 40

You’ll need to bring:
valid photo ID (eg passport)
original birth certificate (showing your parents’ names)

If you don’t have a 10-year employment record here, you’ll need letters to prove you’ve lived here for 10 years after the age of 20 and before age 40 (eg school letters and landlord references).

Not born in Jersey and moved here before age 16:
You must live in Jersey for a continuous period of 10 years immediately before applying for a card

You must bring valid photo ID (eg passport).

If you don’t have a 10-year continuous employment record here, you’ll need to bring proof to cover any gaps like:
** school letters
** landlord references
