Peter Turner Scholarship in Documentary Photography :

Background and purpose :
The Peter Turner scholarship has been established in memory of the late Peter Turner; esteemed author, editor, publisher, curator, and former teacher at the Wellington School of Design.

Peter Turner came to New Zealand from London, England, with a long established international reputation for his renowned editorship of the British photography journal Creative Camera. While in New Zealand he championed photography as an art form and contributed to public knowledge and understanding of the medium through public lectures, and exhibitions of contemporary New Zealand photography. He is especially remembered for the friendship and support he offered many photographers and his special regard for practices he termed lyric, personal, or poetic documentary.

The Scholarship shall be known as the Peter Turner Scholarship in Documentary Photography. One scholarship will be awarded once each year to an exceptional candidate wishing to advance their photographic work through a period of postgraduate study.

Tenure and Value :
One Scholarship shall be awarded each academic year to the value of $5,000.

Eligibility :

The course of study of the scholarship recipient shall be in the area of contemporary documentary photography. This is to be interpreted broadly and may include photographic inquiry related to personal, social, cultural, political, or community concerns. The principal outcome may be an exhibition, an archive project, a book, or a web exhibition, which together with an extended critical essay will be submitted for examination as required by the MFA regulations.

Criteria :
The award will be made to the highest quality Masters project proposal, accompanied by a digital portfolio of photographic work, and a statement about how their work relates to and expands a contemporary understanding of documentary photography.

Conditions of the Award :
** The award may be held concurrently with other bursaries or scholarships.
** The selection committee may refrain from making an award if there is no applicant of sufficient merit.
** Should the applicant wish to change the proposed research topic, permission must be sought from the SoFA Director of Post Graduate Studies. Any change must be fully supported by the supervisor. The Chair of the Scholarships Committee must be notified of any significant approved changes.
** These regulations may be modified by Massey University from time to time as may be required in accordance with the general intent of the scholarship.

Responsibility for the Award :
The Scholarship will be awarded by the Scholarships Committee based upon the recommendations of the selection committee.

The Scholarship will be recommended by a Selection Committee comprising the College of the Creative Arts Scholarships Committee representative (or nominee), the Head of the School of Fine Arts (or nominee), the Director of Photography; and the School of Fine Arts Director of Postgraduate Studies (or nominee).

Payment :
The Scholarship will be paid in two equal instalments in March and August subject to satisfactory academic progress.

Closing Date :
Applications close with the Executive Assistant, School of Fine Arts on 15 December in the year prior to which the award is to be held. Application forms are available from the School of Fine Arts, Massey University, Private Box 756, Wellington, New Zealand.

Application cannot be accepted before 15/09/2014.
