Certificate of Character:
A Certificate of Character is an official document issued by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service which states whether a person has any previous convictions recorded against him/her.
Who may apply for a Certificate of Character?:
A citizen of Trinidad and Tobago or of any foreign country who previously lived in Trinidad and Tobago may apply for a Certificate of Character.
How do I apply for a Certificate of Character?:
** go to the police station in your district with a valid Trinidad and Tobago identification card, driver’s permit or passport (foreigners can use his/her valid passport)
** pay a fee of fifty TT dollars (TT$50.00)
** your fingerprints will be recorded
** the applicant will be issued an official receipt
How soon will I have my Certificate of Character?:
An applicant or his/ her representative should return to their district Police Station with their official receipt five (5) working days after the application was made to collect the Certificate of Character.
It is advisable that he/ she telephone the respective Police Station to ascertain whether the document has been processed.
Foreign residents will be required to:
** have their fingerprints recorded at a Police Station in whatever country they reside
** if the fingerprints are not taken in a Police Station then have fingerprint slip certified by an authorized Notary Public and have the Notary Public’s stamp affixed
** supply a copy of their passport showing the applicant’s photograph, passport number, date of birth and signature
** send a money order equivalent to fifty TT dollars (TT$50.00) and the cost of return postage

How do I check on a case handled by detectives?
Enquire from the Detective at the Police Station where the report was made and you would be briefed on the case.
How do I check on the status of a missing person?
Enquire at the Police Station in which the initial report was made.
How long do I have to wait before I report someone missing?
Missing persons can be reported immediately to the nearest Police Station
How do I become a Police Officer?
An advertisement will be published in the Daily new or on the TTPS website. Follow the application guidelines stated.
A candidate for appointment as a trainee Police Officer must :
i. be a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago;
ii. be required to pass a medical examination conducted by a Government Medical Officer nominated for the purpose;
iii. be required to undergo a polygraph test, psychological test and be tested for dangerous drugs at thecost of the Service;
iv. be of good character as evidenced by a police certificate of character;
v. be not less than eighteen years and not more than thirty-five years of age on the 1st January of the year in which the appointment is made;
vi. in the case of a male, be of good physique and at least one hundred and sixty-seven centimetres in height; or
vii. a female, be of good physique and at least one hundred and fifty centimetres in height;
viii. possess passes in five subjects in the CXC Examinations, including English Language, at General Proficiency at Grade I, II, or III or at Basic Proficiency at Grade I in all five subjects, or five G.C.E. 0’ Level passes, including English, at Grade A, B or C in all five subjects, or produce proof of having reached an equivalent or higher standard of education;
ix. possess a Trinidad and Tobago driver’s permit with a class 3 endorsement to drive light motor vehicles;
x. be required to pass a physical examination and an agility test;
xi. be required to pass a written examination.

Trinidad and Tobago,
West Indies.
The officer of the Snr. Supt. CID/CRO shall cause the completed Certificate of Character to be returned to its origin by Registered Mail within three (3) days of receipt.
