Architect Registration Examination :

The Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®) assesses candidates for their knowledge, skills, and ability to provide the various services required in the practice of architecture.

The ARE has been adopted for use by all 54 U.S. Member Boards and the Canadian provincial and territorial architectural associations as a registration examination required for architectural registration.

Getting Started With the ARE:
You should contact your registration board directly to verify the requirements to gain access to the ARE.

In order to take the ARE, you must:
Meet the requirements of the registration board you plan to receive your initial license from, and
Establish an NCARB Record.

Establishing Your Eligibility to Test:
To begin taking the ARE, you must make a request via the ARE tab in your NCARB Record. Your board of architecture will deem you eligible (or via NCARB for boards participating in NCARB’s Direct Registration Program), and your board will set your eligibility information in My Examination.

You will receive an automated e-mail notification when you are made eligible to take the ARE and have been granted access to My Examination.

Preparing for the ARE:
NCARB Exam Guides and practice software for each division.

An exam guide for each division of the ARE is available in PDF format and can be downloaded below free of charge. Each exam guide contains sample multiple-choice questions (except Schematic Design), one passing and one failing solution for each sample vignette, and a list of references for further study.

Each division also has a practice program with sample vignettes for you to solve. The practice programs can be downloaded free of charge, and will run on an IBM PC or compatible computer running Windows 98, Windows XP, Windows NT or Windows Vista 32-bit.

Taking the ARE:
The ARE is administered at Prometric test centers. Find a local test center near you and learn what to do when you get there.

My Examination:
Through My Examination, ARE candidates can schedule appointments; access score reports; view exam history, rolling clock dates, eligibility to test information; learn about the latest ARE news; and more—all in one place.

e-News:
ARE e-news is a quarterly electronic publication sent to ARE candidates. Topics cover the latest news about the exam, commonly asked questions, important reminders, and information related to the exam from NCARB’s Annual Meeting and Conference held each June.
