Driver License Renewal
Renewal step-by-step:
Renewing your New Jersey driver license can be quick and easy if you prepare ahead. Follow these four steps to learn everything you need to know, such as:
1. You can renew in person; follow special instructions if you are out of the state for an extended period and unable to appear in person

2. You need to show several forms of ID
3. You can renew up to six months in advance*
What you should know:
Identity protection is a primary focus for the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC), which is why a number of measures have been introduced to ensure that customer information is securely maintained.
New Jersey’s Digital Driver’s Licenses and Non-Driver IDs have a number of sophisticated security features designed to prevent duplication or the possibility of alteration. Along with the use of advanced facial recognition technology and the MVC’s 6 Point Identification Program, the MVC is able to ensure that its customers are protected and that only those individuals who are legally entitled to obtain a driver’s license or ID may do so.
What you should bring:
To renew your driver license, you need the following:
** A processing fee (payable by American Express® card, MasterCard®, Visa® card, check, money order or cash)
** Your choice of documents that meet the requirements of MVC’s 6 point ID
** BOAT LICENSE REMINDER- bring your boating safety course certificate with you to renew a boat license or endorsement.
The 6 point ID Program is designed to protect against identity theft by ensuring that no one gets a license without proving who they are. Unfortunately, this requires everyone to prepare ahead–and sometimes even to apply for new documents, such as a civil birth certificate issued by a state.
Mail-in Renewals: Skip the Trip:
Many Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) customers are now eligible* to skip the trip to an agency and can conveniently renew their driver licenses or non-driver IDs through the mail.
Eligible customers will be mailed renewal materials along with instructions. Upon completion of the renewal process, the customer will be mailed a new, four-year photo document (using the photo and signature currently on file) within 10 business days after receipt of your payment. Customers are advised not to wait until the last day of their renewal month to renew by mail as they may not receive their new document prior to expiration.
Note:
Customers who are eligible for mail-in renewal and choose to visit an MVC agency instead will be required to present 6 Points of Identification and have a new photo and signature captured.
*Customers who possess a Commercial Driver License (CDL) or Graduated Driver License (GDL), have an active suspension, have a Temporary Visa Restriction (TVR), have a boat license or boat endorsement, if you are required to have an ignition interlock device on your vehicle, or we require a new photo to be taken in-person, you are not eligible to renew through the mail at this time.
