Travel Registration of Canadians Abroad
Registration of Canadians Abroad is a free service offered by Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada that keeps you connected to Canada in case of an emergency abroad, such as an earthquake or civil unrest, or an emergency at home.

The registration information process:
You can register online or in person.
You must provide travel information and personal details, such as your passport number, residency information in the destination country and emergency contact information in Canada.
Personal information obtained through registration is confidential and is used in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act.
Updating your account information:
If you registered online, you can sign in to update your account information.
If you registered by mail, fax or in person, you must:
** contact the responsible Canadian government office abroad to update your account information, and
** complete a new registration form for each trip abroad.
If you choose not to sign up for the Registration of Canadians Abroad Service:
You are strongly advised to make the following arrangements before you leave so that the Government of Canada can contact you in case of an emergency:
** Leave a detailed travel itinerary and contact details with family or friends in Canada
** Provide family or friends with the telephone number for our Emergency Watch and Response Centre, and
** Carry contact information for the Canadian government offices abroad in the countries you plan to visit.

The information you provide to the Registration of Canadians Abroad service may be used by Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada or a third party, when necessary, to contact, protect and assist you and your co-travellers in case of an emergency.
Your information will only be used in accordance with the provisions of Canada’s Privacy Act.
Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada does not charge a fee for this service and will only contact you in case of an emergency, or if you ask to receive messages upon arrival at your destination. Please note that your mobile carrier may charge a fee for roaming outside of Canada and/or for receiving text messages. Check with your mobile carrier for information on how this might affect you.
Unless otherwise notified by you or a family member, Consular Services will consider your trip completed on the return date specified in your registration.

Note:

All personal information on registrants and their co-travellers will be destroyed 18 months after the registrant has returned to Canada, based on the return date indicated in the registrant’s latest trip information. If during these 18 months a new trip is registered, a new date for the destruction of personal information will be set based on the new return date.
