Traffic Fines Payment :

This page only relates to traffic infringements issued for speeding, unregistered vehicles, negligent driving and other traffic related offences occuring in the ACT.

For traffic infringements in another Australian state or territory please contact the relevant police or road authority. Traffic infringements do not include ACT parking fines

Payment options:
Pay your traffic fine:
Payment must be made within 28 days from the date of service of the infringement notice or the reminder notice.

Payment methods:
Payments can be made online via the ACT Government’s rego.act website
In person: Pay at any Post Office/ Post Office agency or Canberra Connect Shopfront using cash, cheque or debit cards (EFTPOS)
By post: Make cheques or money orders payable to ‘Road Transport Authority’. Please attach the notice with your payment and send to: PO Box 582 Dickson ACT 2602
Bpay: Bpay biller code 343533, customer number is the 10 digit infringement number. Contact your financial institution to make payment
Over the phone: Phone 131 816 (when prompted, enter the Billpay code, 0286)

All non-cash payments are subject to five working days clearance.

Request more time to pay:
You may apply for an extension to pay the infringement notice penalty, or to dispute the liability, within 28 days from the date of service of either the infringement notice or the reminder notice.

The request must contain the following details:
traffic infringement number/s
date of service of the infringement notice/s
your name, current address, drivers licence number and state
a work and/or home contact phone number
the length of extension required (the maximum time allowed is six months)

Request options:
Online: Submit your request online using the Request extension of time to pay online form
In person: Attend any ACT police station and complete a request for extension form that will be forwarded for processing
By fax: Print the Request extension of time to pay form (PDF, 50KB), complete the details and fax to the number shown on the form.
By post: Print the Request extension of time to pay form (PDF, 50KB), complete the details and post to:
Chief Police Officer
GPO Box 2208
Canberra ACT 2601

You will receive a reply in writing, advising the outcome of your extension request.

Submit an infringement notice declaration:
The responsible person for a registrable vehicle involved in an infringement notice offence is taken to be the individual in possession or control of the vehicle at the time of the offence unless the responsible person proves, on the balance of probabilities, that the person was not in possession or control of the vehicle at the time of the offence.

If you are not the person who committed the offence, under Part 3 of the Road Transport (General) Act 1999, you must take all reasonable steps to give the authority sufficient information to identify and locate the individual who was in possession or control of the vehicle at the time of the offence.

An individual takes all reasonable steps if they provide a declaration within the time required (including any additional time granted) and the authority accepts the declaration.

A corporation takes all reasonable steps if they provide a declaration within the time required (including any additional time granted) and the authority accepts the declaration.

In relation to red light and speed camera offences issued by the ACT Traffic Camera office, you can download an Infringement Notice Declaration from the ACT Registrations website or contact Canberra Connect on 13 22 81.

In the case of an infringement notice issued by the Australian Federal Police, use one of the following forms:
Illegal User Infringement Notice Declaration
Known User Infringement Notice Declaration
Sold Vehicle Infringement Notice Declaration
Unknown User Infringement Notice Declaration

For the declaration to be accepted, you must complete all the required fields. DO NOT PAY THIS NOTICE IF AN INFRINGEMENT NOTICE DECLARATION IS TO BE PROCESSED. The demerit points as stated on the infringement notice will be incurred by you if you pay the infringement notice penalty. You must return any completed Infringement Notice Declaration associated with this notice to the Chief Police Officer and post to PO Box 2208, Canberra ACT 2601.

Request an extension of time to submit an infringement notice declaration:
If you wish to apply for longer time to pay the penalty or submit an Infringement Notice Declaration, you must write to the Chief Police Officer and post to PO Box 2208, Canberra ACT 2601 within 28 days after the date of service of the infringement notice.

Alternatively, you can email your request to infringements AT afp.gov.au or fax your request to (02) 6245 7419. The Chief Police Officer will write to you about the outcome of your request.
