Prepaying a Traffic or Criminal Violation

Fines and Costs may be paid by Internet, Mail, Phone, or In-Person. Instructions for each method of payment are provided below.

The court accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover Card. A 4% convenience fee is charged per credit card transaction. When paying by mail or in-person, checks, money orders, and cash (in-person only) are also acceptable.

Payments for cases heard in the Town of Vienna and the Town of Herndon are accepted at the Fairfax County General District Court. There is no staff at either town except on the mornings of court.

Note: When trying to prepay by Internet or phone, it may take up to two weeks or longer from the date a traffic or criminal summons is issued before it will appear in the court’s database.

Fines which remain unpaid after 30 days following the court date will result in suspension of driving privileges in Virginia unless a Time to Pay Agreement is established with the court.

Internet Payments:
Many, but not all, traffic cases may be prepaid before court online. Tickets written on local county or town ordinances cannot be prepaid on the Internet. Following conviction, all criminal and traffic cases may be paid using the Internet payment website.

** On the right hand side of the page, select “Pay Traffic Tickets and Other Offenses”.
** Read the Instructions on How to Pay Traffic Tickets and Other Offenses.
** Select the link to “General District Court Case Information System” [REMOVE: or Select “Case Status and Information” from the links on the left and select “General District Court”.]
** Type the characters shown in the image for verification, read the instructions, and click on Accept
** On the left, for Court, select “Fairfax County General District” from the drop down menu
** Under Traffic/Criminal, select “Name Search” or “Case Number Search”. The online payment system only recognizes the case number assigned by the court, not your summons number as issued on your ticket. If you don’t know your case number, choose “Name Search”.
** For Name Search, enter your last name, comma, and first name. Do not use the middle name on your first attempt, example: Smith, John. You may also wish to try typing in the name exactly as it appears on your court summons or warrant.
** When you find your name, the Action column should read “Mark for Payment”.
** If “Mark for Payment” is not an option, please contact the Court. Some violations of local ordinances may only be prepaid by phone.
** Click on “Mark for Payment” for all cases that you wish to pay then select the button for “Process Payment” at the bottom of the screen.
** On the next screen, verify the correct case(s) have been selected and then select “Continue Payment Process” and proceed through the following screens to complete the process.
** Remember to print a copy of the Payment Confirmation screen as your receipt when your transaction is complete. If you provided an email address, a receipt will be emailed to you as confirmation of payment.
** There is a 4% convenience fee assessed per transaction when payment is made by credit or debit card.

Mail Payments:
To pay by mail, please mail your check, money order, or credit card payment form to the mailing address listed below. When mailing a payment, please include a copy of your summons or bill and be sure your full name and case number are written on your check or money order or that your credit card payment form is filled out completely.

Phone Payments:
To pay by phone, you may call the Traffic Division (703-246-3764) or the Criminal Division (703-246-3305) and pay by credit card using VISA, MASTERCARD, AMERICAN EXPRESS, or DISCOVER. Traffic tickets and some criminal cases may be paid by credit card using the Court’s Interactive Voice Response (IVR) phone system between 6:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. To use the IVR, you must know your case or summons number. If you do not know your case or summons number, you can go to the General District Courts Case Information system online to get your case number at https://web.archive.org/web/20221226201613/https://www.vacourts.gov/.

In-Person Payments:
To pay in person, you will need to come to the Clerk’s Office at the Fairfax County Courthouse, 4110 Chain Bridge Road, Fairfax, VA 22030. This applies to Vienna and Herndon Town cases, as well. Staff is not available in the towns except on the morning of court.

Driving Points are Assessed by the Department of Motor Vehicles:
Unlike the State of Maryland, General District Court judges in the Commonwealth of Virginia do not have the authority to adjust or reduce points. After conviction, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) determines the amount of demerit points to be assessed according to the severity of the offense.
