Using your bus pass:
When travelling with your Older Person’s or Disabled Person’s Bus Pass, make sure you have your pass ready to show to the driver when you board the bus. Most buses in York are now fitted with smart card readers.

If your bus has a smart card reader, simply touch your pass on the reader when you board.

Please note that passes may not be recognised by smart card readers in other parts of England where the local bus operator has not fully updated their systems. If your new pass does not register on the ticket machine, please show it to the driver; it is still valid for free travel after 9:30am.

When you can use your bus pass:
** After 9am Monday to Friday (after 9:30am if travelling outside York and North Yorkshire).
** Before 6am Monday to Friday in York & North Yorkshire where services commence sufficiently early.
** Any time at weekends or bank holidays.

Where you can use your bus pass:
** National passes are valid on local bus services throughout England.
** Old-style York bus passes are no longer valid, regardless of the expiry date printed on the pass.
** Services incorporating a special amenity element (such as Park & Ride) may incur a charge. For example, passholders boarding at a York Park & Ride site must pay an 80p fare.
** Passes are not valid for use on excursions, tour buses or race-day shuttles.
** Passes are not generally valid for free travel on long-distance scheduled coach services such as National Express. Please check with the coach operator before travelling.
** Passes are not valid within Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

When using your pass outside the local area, please let the driver know your destination to avoid any confusion.

How to apply for a bus pass:
You can only apply for a bus pass from the authority within which your sole or principal residence is located. If your sole or principal residence is outside the City of York boundary, please contact your local authority or Passenger Transport Executive to find out how to apply for a pass.

If you have recently moved to the York area and have a bus pass issued in another area, you must return it to the issuing authority (identified by the logo at the top of your pass) before applying for a new pass from City of York Council.

Apply online:
Our new online application system makes it easy to apply for an older person’s bus pass using your computer.

Before starting your application, you will need:
** A valid passport or UK driving licence.
** A valid email address.
** Your National Insurance number.
** A good quality digital photo of yourself- clearly showing your whole face in front of a plain background with no-one else visible in the picture. Photos should ideally be in jpg format, and must be no more than 2Mb in size.

City of York Council is under a duty to protect the public funds it administers. By completing an online application, you give permission for City of York Council to use the information you provide for the improvement of financial management and the prevention and detection of fraud. It may also share this information with other bodies administering public funds solely for these purposes.

As this is a brand new service, we’re keen to hear your feedback. If you have any comments or suggestions regarding the online applications system, please email us.
