MUIS POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP (PGS) :
INTRODUCTION :
The Muis Postgraduate Scholarship aims to develop local Muslim scholars and learned persons specialising in various fields of study relevant for the continuing development of the Singapore Muslim community.
Applicants must be Muslim citizens or permanent residents or children of Singapore citizens.
As the community faces more complex issues and challenges, we need specialists and thought leaders to provide enlightened solutions and profound guidance for the community to lead a progressive and vibrant religious life.
OBJECTIVES : The Scholarship aims to:
** Create more opportunities for deserving individuals to pursue further studies in areas relating to the study of Islam and Muslim societies, relevant to the community’s progress and development.
** Increase the pool of local Muslim scholars and learned persons specialising in various areas related to Islam and Muslim societies.
** Raise the quality of local Muslim scholars and learned persons within the Muslim community.
SYED ISA SEMAIT SCHOLAR (SISS) AWARD :
The most distinguished PGS candidate will be further eligible to receive the Syed Isa Semait Scholar (SISS) Award. Introduced in 2011 to honour the former Mufti of Singapore Shaikh Syed Isa Semait, the award is an additional monetary award of S$10,000 per annum for the duration of the course of study. POTENTIAL CANDIDATES :
Outstanding graduates (both Madrasah & non-Madrasah) from local and overseas universities with a keen interest to pursue further studies on Islam, Muslim societies and other relevant fields.
FIELDS OF STUDY :
The following are the preferred fields of study ;
** Islamic Studies (such as Qur’anic Exegesis, Study of Hadith, Jurisprudence, etc)
** Islam and Contemporary Thought
** Islam and Interfaith Studies
** Islam and Comparative Religion
** Islamic Education (Madrasah Curriculum and Instruction)
TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF AWARD :
i) The scholarship is awarded for full-time postgraduate studies at reputable learning institutions locally or overseas. It includes tuition fees, living expenses, costs of relevant developmental programmes and other approved fees. This will be provided for the candidates within the stipulated period of study.
ii) Upon completion of studies, successful candidates will be required to serve a bond with Muis or other approved agencies in consultation with Muis.
ELIGIBILITY :
Applicants must;
** permanent residents (who have resided in Singapore for at least 5 years before the date of application);
** Have obtained outstanding Bachelors Degree or its equivalent in any field of study;
** Preferably be between 21 and 40 years old at time of application
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA : Eligible applicants will be assessed based on the following (not in order of importance) :-
** Academic achievement, track record in religious and/or community activities and relevant experience;
** Applicant’s potential and commitment to contributing towards the development of the Muslim community in Singapore;
** Benefit and value of the training to the applicant and to the development of the Muslim community in Singapore;
** Financial background of the applicant
HOW TO APPLY :
The application for the academic year 2014/2015 will open on 5 April 2014 and the closing date is 9 May 2014.

All application forms, supporting materials and confidential letter/s must reach Muis Friday, 9 May 2014 at 12.00 noon. Late and incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Please email the documents in PDF format to academy@muis.gov.sg(the entire size of the document should not exceed 1MB). All documents must be categorized appropriately (according to the Annexes as highlighted in para (V) page 3 of the application form). Only application forms which bear the original signature of the applicant are accepted.
Note: Submission through fax will not be accepted.
SELECTION PROCESS & NOTIFICATION OF RESULTS :
All applicants will be assessed and only shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by the Muis Scholarship Committee.
We regret that only shortlisted applicants will be notified of the result of their application. The Islamic Religious Council of Singapore does not enter into correspondence with regards to the reasons of non-selection of candidates. The decision made by the Committee is final and appeals will not be entertained.
