How can one register for a Medical Benefits Scheme Card?:
By visiting the office of the Medical Benefits Scheme with the following:
** Social Security Card
** Passport or
** Birth Certificate (National only) or
** Driver’s License (Nationals only)
How can a beneficiary make a claim?:
For the non-contributor, that is, the person who is not employed, you are required to bring the following:
** Medical Certificate
** Passport or
** Birth Certificate (Nationals only) or
** Driver’s License (Nationals only)
By bringing into the office of the Medical Benefits Scheme:
** Original receipt(s) for services received
** Medical Benefits Card
In the case of an overseas claim, the following are required:
** Original receipt for services received
** Letter of referral from a local doctor
** Medical report from the medical provider overseas
** Airline ticket
** Medical Benefits Card
Can a beneficiary be reimbursed for a doctor’s visit?:
No, only the doctor is allowed to claim for reimbursement.
What is the maximum for reimbursement for overseas treatment?:
E.C $2,000.00 plus the cost of the airline ticket.
Can a beneficiary be reimbursed for lab procedures that are not available at Holberton Hospital?:
Yes, but reimbursements will be paid based on the Hospital Fees.
Can my spouse benefit from my contributions to the Medical Benefits Scheme?:
No. Each beneficiary is entitled to hold his/her card.
Why does it take so long to process my prescription?:
The processing of a prescription is dependent on the number of drugs; interpretation of what is written; the pharmacist ascertaining if there are any drug interactions; and recording the information and preparation of the drugs with the appropriate dosage instructions for the patient.
What is the best time for me to take my medication?:
This is dependent on whether food or other substances interfere with the breakdown and /or absorption of the drug. However, your pharmacist will inform you of the best time to take your medication.
Benefits lost by employer’s default :
According to the Medical Benefits Act 2010, Section 51, sub-section 1, “Where in the determination of any claim for benefit it is found that the benefit is lost by reason only than an employer has failed or neglected to pay any contribution in respect of a registered person or to comply with any requirement relating to the payment or collection of contributions, then where the claim is by the registered person, the Board shall pay to the registered person a sum equal in amount to the benefit so lost and thereupon that sum shall become due to the Board by the employer and shall be recoverable in accordance with section 58.”
