The University of Lapland has a very unique profile and expertise in the fields of law, education, social sciences, and art & design. Studying spaces for international degree students are limited and resultingly, competition for admissions is significant. Only students with relevant academic backgrounds, strong portfolios, and competent language skills are admitted.

For Master’s Degree Studies:
International applicants who wish to complete a Master’s degree at the University of Lapland and who have completed a first degree (normally a bachelor’s degree) in a relevant field of study from an institution of higher education, entitling her/him to apply for master’s degree studies in her/his home country. For Doctoral Studies:
International applicants who wish to complete a Doctoral degree at the University of Lapland and have taken a degree equivalent to the Finnish aster’s degree.
For Exchange Studies:
(Non-degree seeking students):
International applicants who wish to study at the University of Lapland for a one or two semesters or who wish to participate in the Arctic Studies Programme (ASP).

FAQ :
Am I eligible for doctoral studies?
Section 37, subsection 3 of the Finnish Universities Act (558/2009) stipulates about the eligibility for studies leading to a higher university degree as follows:
Eligible for studies leading only to a higher university degree shall be a person :
(1) who has an applicable lower university degree;
(2) who has an applicable polytechnic degree; or
(3) who has an applicable education completed abroad which in the awarding country gives eligibility for corresponding higher education.
What are the thematic doctoral programmes?
There are altogether four doctoral programmes :
** Communities and Changing Work
** Culture-Based Service Design
** General doctoral programme
** Northern Cultures and Natural Resource Politics.
** Three programmes are multidisciplinary, thematic doctoral programmes: Culture-Based Service Design, Northern Cultures and Natural Resource Politics, and Communities and Changing Work.
** If you belong to one of a thematic programme, your doctoral path will be multidisciplinary and you’ll take thematic studies (20 ECTS) as part of your doctoral degree. The Graduate School organises these thematic studies for each thematic programme.
** The general doctoral programme is field-specific and the hosting faculty is your primary contact in that case.
** If you are seeking to study in one of the thematic programmes, please contact the professor of the programme or the Graduate School about practicalities. If you wish to study in the general doctoral programme, contact the administrative manager or head of study affairs in your faculty of interest.
