UCC CACSSS Excellence Scholarships
pplications for Excellence Scholarships (PhD) are invited from Humanities and Social Sciences graduates (excluding Mathematics, Law and Commerce/Business) who wish to carry out research for the degree of PhD (or PhD Track or MPhil as a pathway to a PhD) commencing in September 2015 in the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences (CACSSS) at University College Cork, Ireland.

Applicants must have at least Second Class Honours (Grade 1) or equivalent in their first or subsequent degree.
A maximum of eleven CACSSS Excellence Scholarships (PhD), in the form of EU fee waivers (or equivalent, tenable for a maximum of 3 years) will be awarded to successful applicants.
University College Cork has established a reputation as one of the top institutions in Ireland for innovative research. The College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences has over 300 doctoral students and provides a wide range of activities and training through its Graduate School.
Terms And Conditions:
1. The College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences Excellence Scholarships (PhD) will be awarded in the form of a fee waiver, tenable for a maximum of three years from the date of initial registration. Recipients of the scholarship will be awarded the title of College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences Excellence Scholar (PhD).
2. The Excellence Scholarships (PhD) are for Humanities and Social Sciences graduates (excluding Mathematics, Law and Commerce/Business) who wish to carry out research for the degree of PhD (or PhD Track, or MPhil as a pathway to a PhD) in the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences (CACSSS) at University College Cork, Ireland. Applicants must have at least Second Class Honours (Grade 1) or equivalent in their first or subsequent degree.
3. Applications are invited from students who will commence a PhD (or PhD Track, or MPhil as a pathway to a PhD) programme in September 2015. Applicants should already have applied through www.pac.ie for the relevant programme. The award of the scholarship(s) is contingent on the student being accepted to the relevant PhD (or PhD Track or MPhil) programme.
4. The scholarships are open to EU and non-EU students. However, the funding will only cover the EU fee, so successful non-EU applicants will be responsible for the balance.
5. Applicants should complete the Excellence Scholarship (PhD) application form. A letter of support from the Head of Department/School where the proposed research is to be carried out should be submitted with the application form. In addition, applicants should ask their prospective supervisor or a recent lecturer/academic advisor/supervisor to send an academic reference separately, on the appropriate form. Non-UCC graduates should include scanned transcripts of their academic record.
6. All documentation must be submitted by email only to graduateschool.cacsss AT ucc.ie. Incomplete applications, hard copy applications, or applications received after the closing date will not be considered. Applications must adhere to the stipulated word limits.
7. Selection of successful applicants on the basis of the materials supplied will be by the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences Graduate Studies Committee. Scholarships will be awarded to candidates of sufficient merit who have feasible research topics of academic value.
8. Applications will be assessed according to the following criteria:
** Quality of the project
** Research methodology
** Why the research merits the support of the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences Excellence Scholarship (PhD) scheme
** Research plan
** Applicant profile
9. Successful applicants must confirm their intention to take up the Scholarship within 2 weeks of the initial offer.
10. Should, during the period of the scholarship, a successful applicant also be the recipient of any other scholarship or grant of a like magnitude which covers fees, s/he will be required to forego the award of College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences Excellence Scholarship but will retain the title of College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences Excellence Scholar (PhD).
11. The scholarship holder and his/her research supervisor must submit annual reports to the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences Graduate Studies Committee. If the progress reports are deemed unsatisfactory, the scholarship will be terminated.
12. The College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences should be notified in good time of any medical or personal problems likely to cause disruption to the scholarship holder’s research schedule.
13. If a teaching/tutoring opportunity in an area reasonably compatible with the scholarship recipient’s expertise becomes available, the recipient is permitted to undertake such work up to a maximum of four hours per week only, as agreed by the recipient’s supervisors/mentors at UCC.
