This department is located in the hospital. It is open 24 hours a day and is staffed by nurses, with a doctor on duty during the day and on call at night, weekends and public holidays.

The department has recently been refurbished, providing more space and privacy. Clients are asked to wait in the waiting area, where a variety of health literature is available. Nurses will call the clients inside one by one, and refer them to the doctor as needed. Please note that the preferred course of action is to go to your district clinic first, and the nurse will refer you to A and E if necessary.

Nutrition Services:
Chronic nutrition-related disorders are now the leading causes of premature death and disability. Additionally these disorders have the propensity to undermine the development of the health care systems because of the increased human and economic burden.

Nutrition is an integral component in the prevention, management and control of these conditions. In fact, nutritional care is significant in the care and recovery of all hospitalized patients. The primary outcome of nutritional therapy is to positively impact the health results for the patient. Effective nutritional therapy is achieved through a symbiotic relationship between the clinical and administrative components of dietetic services. The relevant information gathered through the clinical dietetic intervention must be transmitted, interpreted and applied administratively, and subsequent clinical findings assessed to determine if the treatment of the patients was effective.

When a nutritional assessment is done for patients (clinical dietetics), the directives (specifically the diet prescription) form the basis for the administrative dietetic system.

Administrative/Food Service Dietetics:
** Development of menus, meal plans and standards
** Production of meals and snacks based on diet prescription
** Provision of a variety of wholesome, nutritious, palatable and attractive foods to all patients within the food budget
** Recipe development and testing

Clinical Dietetic Services in Secondary Health Care:
Ensure the provision of optimal nutritional care to all inpatients of the hospital in terms of nutritional assessment, counseling and follow-up care
** Nutritional assessment of inpatients
** Provision and verification of diet prescription
** Development of suitable interventions – individualized nutritional care plan with the inclusion of all stakeholders
** Determination of effectiveness of interventions developed

Nutrition plays an integral part in Primary Health Care, and hence dietary counseling and nutritional assessment is also offered by appointment at the district clinics (health centres).
