Registering a vehicle :

To Register a vehicle in Guernsey the following criteria has to be met:
** The vehicle must be in Guernsey.
** The vehicle must have been declared at, and cleared through, Guernsey Customs

** The vehicle must be primarily for circulation on the roads of Guernsey.
** The registered owner of the vehicle must be a resident of Guernsey (see definition of ‘Normal Residence’ on the ‘New Guernsey Residents’ page).

** If your vehicle is over 7’6¾” in width and/or over 31′ in length then it is classed as an “oversize” vehicle in Guernsey. Please be aware that these vehicles cannot be freely circulated around the Island. You will have to apply for an oversize vehicle permit from the Traffic Office.
** Please note that if your vehicle is a camper van you will need permission from the Planning Division of the Environment Department to register the vehicle.

At the time of Registration you will have to produce:
** A completed ‘Application to Register a Motor Vehicle / Motorcycle’ Form available from our Vehicle Registration and Licensing Department.
** The vehicle’s security form (V55/1-4) must be surrendered. This document is produced by the vehicle manufacturer. If the vehicle is a used (second hand) vehicle imported into the Island it is necessary to produce the vehicle’s original and current registration document. If the name in which the vehicle is to be registered is different from the last registered name on the vehicle documents then continuity of registered ownership must be shown, such as a bill of sale.
** A one-off registration fee of £40.00 is payable on all first-time registrations in Guernsey.

You can make the application to register a vehicle at the Department premises in Bulwer Avenue, or by post as long as all of the above documentation is enclosed.

Registration of a Motorcycle:
The same procedure should be followed as above.

The application form requests specific information relating to Maximum Net Power (in kW) and Power/Weight Ratio (in kW/kg) where applicable.

Registration of Agricultural Vehicles:
Vehicles to be used for agricultural purposes only, and mobile cranes, are also required to complete form MV/TF 09, which is available from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Division.

First Full Licence :
To obtain a full licence you must submit the following to the Driver & Vehicle Licensing, Bulwer Avenue Office, or in respect of Alderney residents, States Office, Island Hall :
** A completed driving licence application form;
** Your provisional driving licence (both the plastic card and paper counterpart);

** Your practical driving test certificate.
** Our licences usually run to the month before a decade birthday, e.g. 20, 30, 40.etc.

** Therefore, if your provisional licence runs to your next decade birthdays then there is no charge for upgrading from a provisional to a full licence. If however, your provisional licence is due to expire before your decade birthday you will be charged £4.80 per year up to your next decade birthday for a Full Licence.

  1. Dear Team,
    I have photos of Dr Jack Gibson/my father-in-law’s car from 1955 when he lived in Courtes Falaises in St Martin’s(he was the Surgeon at the Hospital for a few years) – it’s a remarkable vehicle(reg.No.6000)and I’m very keen to track it down with your help! Can you, please?

  2. I need some advice on transferring registration, but your telephone is not available
