Unemployment Benefit:
This is a cash benefit paid to unemployed people who are trying to find work with an employer.
To receive Unemployment Benefit you must be unemployed and available for work at least 4 days in any week and satisfy certain contribution conditions.
Two contribution conditions which must be met are:
1) You must have paid at least 26 contributions as an employed person to Guernsey at any time in your working life.
2) In the relevant contribution year your contribution record must have at least 26 contributions as an employed person or contribution credits as an employed person.
If you are claiming Unemployment Benefit in the first six months of any year, the relevant contribution year on which the amount of benefit is based is the calendar year of two years before. If you are claiming Unemployment Benefit in the second six months of any year, the relevant contribution year is one year before.
Recruitment Grant for Employers:
The Recruitment Grant is a series of payments designed to support employers in recruiting staff who have been out of work for extended periods.
To claim the grant an employer must recruit an employee who is a Guernsey or Alderney resident and who has claimed Unemployment Benefit or Incapacity Benefit for at least six months continuously up to the date of recruitment.
What is the relevent contribution Year ?
If you are claiming unemployment benefit in the first six months of any year, the relevant contribution year on which the amount of benefit is based is the calendar year of two years before. If you are claiming unemployment benefit in the second six months of any year, the relevant contribution year is one year before.
How much will I get ?
The amount of unemployment benefit you will get depends on your contribution record. The full rate of unemployment benefit is provided for your information in the Benefits and Contributions leaflet in the downloads section of this page.
How do I claim unemployment benefit ?
As soon as you become unemployed you should call into the Job Centre at Social Security if you live in Guernsey, or the States Office if you live in Alderney. An appointment will be made for you to make your claim and you will be told what you need to bring with you to that appointment.
You should claim as soon as you become unemployed. If you do not claim straightaway, you would not usually receive unemployment benefit for any of the days before you first registered at the Job Centre or Alderney States Office.
