Renew an SPSV Driver Licence:
An SPSV driver licence is valid for five years. Drivers are advised to commence the renewal process at least 12 weeks prior to their expiry date in order to ensure that they receive their updated identification cards in time.

There is no penalty for renewing your driver licence early – the period of validity of the renewed licence will commence immediately after the expiry of the old licence.
To renew your SPSV driver licence, you must hold:
** A valid full Irish driving licence or equivalent;
** A valid SPSV driver licence;
** An up-to-date tax clearance certificate.
Mandatory Area Knowledge Test:
If the Authority receives a number of complaints relating to your knowledge of the area in which you are operating during the period of your licence and these complaints are upheld, the Authority may require you to sit and pass the relevant Area Knowledge Test prior to renewing your licence.
Mandatory disqualification:
If you have been convicted (in Ireland or elsewhere) of any of the offences that are specified in the Taxi Regulation Act 2013, you are disqualified from holding an SPSV driver licence – in some cases for life, in other cases for specified periods of time. You are required to notify the licensing authority (An Garda Síochána) of any such conviction.
If you are disqualified for this reason, you can apply to the appropriate court to have the disqualification lifted. If you believe you may be affected by this, it is strongly advised that you consult the legislation and seek legal advice.
Pay fee:
Pay the relevant licence fee to the National Transport Authority. You can do this over the phone using a credit or debit card (phone 0761 064000). The Authority will issue you with a receipt for this fee. (Note that this fee is non-refundable: you should pay it only if you are confident that you can satisfy all the conditions for licensing.)
Obtain and fill in form:
Obtain a renewal application form (PSV 15/18) from your local PSV Office.
Obtain photographs:
Obtain two identical passport-style photographs, each measuring approximately 10cm by 7cm, showing your head and shoulders and complying in other respects with standards for passport photographs.
Submit application:
Complete the renewal application form and submit it to your local Garda PSV office (outside Dublin) or to the Carriage Office (in Dublin), along with:
** Your photographs;
** Your tax clearance certificate;
** Your driving licence;
** Your SPSV driver licence;
** The receipt for your renewal fee; and
** Any other documents required by the Gardaí.
What happens next?:
Your renewal application will be processed by An Garda Síochána, and, if approved, you will in due course be issued with an SPSV driver licence, driver display card and smart card.
