Arizona Educator Exams (Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessments (AEPA) or National Evaluation Series (NES):
In November 1997, the Arizona State Board of Education adopted rules regarding the evaluation of educators applying for state certifications. The rules require that applicants for teacher certification pass both a test of subject knowledge and a test of professional knowledge. The Arizona Educator Exams (AEPA or NES) were designed to ensure that each certified teacher or administrator has the necessary knowledge to teach or lead in Arizona public schools.

Comparable Out-Of-State Exams:
Comparable out-of-state exams will only be accepted under the rules of Reciprocity. Individuals who are completing an Arizona State Board approved program must take and pass the appropriate NES or AEPA exams for the program you are completing. Lists will be updated periodically as new information is obtained. These versions supersede any previous versions.

Out-of-state exams must meet the following criteria:
** Only exam score reports that state “Pass” or “Passed will be accepted. Score reports will NOT be interpreted to determine a passing score.
** Scores 10 years or older will not be accepted.
** Exams will only be accepted if the exams were taken and passed to qualify for an out-of-state educator certificate prior to application for the Arizona certificate.

Emergency Certificates:
A request form for the issuance of an Emergency Substitute Certificate must be completed and signed by the school district Superintendent verifying an emergency employment situation exists.

Endorsements:
Endorsements are attachments to teaching certificates and indicate areas of specialization. They are for grades K-12 unless otherwise indicated. Once issued, they are automatically renewed with the teaching certificate on which the endorsement was posted. Optional endorsements may be required by local governing boards. All requirements for the endorsement must be met. Courses and programs must be taken from an accredited institution.

Teaching Intern Pathway to Certification:
Teaching Interns:
In pursuing teacher certification, participants will teach full-time under the “Teaching Intern” certificate. Upon the issuance of a Teaching Intern certificate, individuals will be able to pursue a teaching contract in an Arizona public school or charter. They receive full teaching salary and benefits, which ensures no loss of income for participants.
