Visitors Permit /Bussiness Visit Permit:
What is a Visitors permit/Business visit permit ?:
This is a permit issued to a foreign national allowing him/her to enter and reside in Malawi for a short period for purposes of tourism, visiting relatives and business.

It is valid for 30 days which may be extended for further 60 days upon payment of appropriate fees.
Who can apply ?:
Any foreign national who intends to visit Malawi for legitimate reasons.
Where and How to apply:
This is applied at a port of entry by presenting oneself to the Immigration officer, with ones travel documents, entry card and supporting documents(list of supporting documents/information). It is issued at the port of entry.
Temporary Permit:
What is a Temporary Permit ?:
This permit authorising a Prohibited Immigrant to enter Malawi for temporary residence therein or to travel through Malawi upon such conditions as may be prescribed by the Minister.
Who can apply?:
Any foreign national who was ever declared a prohibited Immigrant in Malawi and to temporarily enter or transit through Malawi for specified period.
How and where to apply?:
You can apply to the responsible Minister through the Chief Immigration officer. The application can be submitted at our foreign missions or you can send your application with supporting documents by post, by courier to the Immigration Headquarters.
What will happen when I make my application?:
The application will be submitted to the Minister for decision. Once a decision is made you will be formally notified.
Temporary Employee Permit:
What is a Temporary Employment Permit ?:
This permit is issued to persons before they enter Malawi for the purpose of taking up specified employment in Malawi.
Do I need a Temporary Employment Permit ?:
You need a Temporary Employment Permit if you are a foreigner who has been offered employment by any organisation in Malawi. The organisation has the responsibility to apply for the permit on behalf of the applicant. (expatriates explanation paragraph)
How and where do I apply for the permit ?:
The application process is outlined in The Policy Statement on The Employment of Expatriates . The TEP application form and supporting documents are submitted at the Immigration Headquarters or Regional Immigration Offices for processing upon payment of the processing fees .
What will happen when I make my application?:
The application will be submitted to the TEP Approval Committee for consideration, then the Minister for decision. Once a decision is made you will be formally notified if your application has been approved or rejected. If approved one will be required to pay the appropriate fees within 30 days from date of notification.
Can I renew my permit ?:
A TEP can be renewed twice through submission of a TEP Renewal Application Form and supporting documents to the Immigration offices. An application renewal must be submitted 3 months before the expiry of the permit.
Note: All applicants for new TEP are required by law to wait outside Malawi until the application has been approved.
Temporary Residence Permit:
What is Temporary Residence Permit?:
This is issued to a visitor with a valid Visitors /Business Visit permit who has resided in Malawi for the maximum of 90 days but has a legitimate and justifiable reasons for continued residence.
Who can apply?:
A visitor with a valid Visitors/Business Visit Permit who has resided in Malawi for the maximum of 90 days but has legitimate and justifiable reasons for continued residence. A foreign national who would like to enter Malawi for short term consultancy or other work related activity.
How and where to apply?:
You can submit a Temporary Residence Permit application form and supporting documents at our Regional Offices and Headquarters. For consultant and others the application can be submitted by the Institution that has engaged them.
What will happen when I make my application?:
The application will be processed and submitted for decision. Once a decision is made you will be formally notified. If approved you will pay the appropriate fees .
